Meet Jasmine

Day of my BC - July 26, 2012

Hello! My name is Jasmine, or as I like to refer to myself, Jazzy! I am a thirty-something year old working professional and mother. I am the product of a Puerto Rican mother and African American father and identify with both which is where the name Naturally Mixed Diva comes from!

I was never into hair care - growing up, my mother would comb my hair and put several braids with the coordinating barrets to match my outfit and I hated it! When I was ten I saw my mother relaxing my sister's hair and I BEGGED her to do mine. To shut me up, she relaxed my hair and from then on I'd spend a lot time working to keep my hair as bone straight as possible. I'd spend hours in the Dominican hair salons frying my roots straight and this continued until about 2008.

In 2008, I decided to transition (grow out my relaxed hair) and successfully did so for about a year. Once I was fully natural, I exchanged the hours at the salon with hours watching the natural guru's on YouTube trying to learn tricks on managing this new texture of hair. My relaxed hair was easy - I'd cleanse once a week, blow dry, flat iron wrap and repeat a week later. This "new" hair was anything BUT easy! There was so much to learn!! Twist, moisturize, protective styles, your curl pattern... and the list goes on and on. I got frustrated that I couldn't master my hair and wore it straightened 95% of the time. I thought "This is crazy!!" and relaxed my hair again in July 2011.

First thing I noticed - my relaxers didn't have the same effect anymore. I couldn't get my hair bone straight. My crown insisted on being wavy, I struggled to harmoniously blend my relaxed hair with my new fitness kick and started thinking about doing the Big Chop (BC)! I knew I didn't want to transition again, but I wasn't sure how I'd do chopping off all my hair either. I bothered every fellow naturalista that I knew and asked many questions the response was a resounding CUT IT! LOL!! So, I did.

July 26, 2012 I did my big chop (pictured above) and it took a minute to grow on me while others loved it immediately! I started writing down everything about my journey and realized that it may be more helpful to others if I share my journey.

Thank you for stopping by and showing your support!
