The second thing I realized after my BC was that my natural, curly hair was extremely DRY! It looked and felt like straw, and since I didn't have enough hair to hide in a ponytail I had to figure out what worked for my hair and quick! I spent the first month trying products that were recommended by fellow naturals, but my hair was dry and as mentioned in my post last week, I didn't want to have to rely on a ton of products.
I came across my journey saver, Curly Girl-The Handbook by Lorraine Massey. I ordered it the same day. I love, love, love this book! It is exactly what the title implies - a handbook for curly girls! It is packed full of information on how to care for your curls and includes a step-by-step DVD. This book helped me find the culprit to my dry hair (sulfates & silicones in the products I was using), identify my curl pattern and gave me tips on styling, homemade products and trimming my own hair.
It gave me the information I needed to have healthy, moisturized curls with just conditioner and gel. Yes, you read that right, just conditioner and gel - I don't even use the gel as directed! Here are my current products:
Daily:
- Vo5 - Conditioner (Dollar Tree, Walmart) - I use this daily for my wash n' go
- Tresemme Naturals Silicone Free Conditioner (Walmart, Target) - I use mainly for my deep conditioner, but I sometimes use it daily along with my Vo5
- Olive Oil Eco Styler Gel (Dollar General, Sally's) - I put on my edges
1x/month:
- I make my own hair oil that I use if I want some added moisture - a mix of Jojoba, Grapeseed, Olive, Shea butter, Coconut and Argan
- Soft N' Free Nothing But Conditioning Co-Wash (Sally's) - (still on the fence about this product & may switch once I run out)
- Bioinfusion Curl Creme & Serum (Walgreens) - I like both of these products, I use them at night when I want to add moisture to my hair.
See, easy-peasy! Now I don't have to worry about stocking my cabinets with a variety of expensive products to manage my curls. I've saved my hair and my wallet by embracing my curls.
Thanks for stopping by!
